The Horse's Point of View

I've had a few complaints that I don't write often enough. Well there are a couple of reasons, the first rather obvious. If one of my humans doesn't give me a hand I can't do much about it. Next, there is so much going on all around me, frankly I forget.

Here's a run down of a few exciting items. I had a little crash the other day. I was not expecting the fence to show up so quickly or so solidly and I slid right into it. It didn't help that the grass was wet either. I heard some serious grumbling about fixing the broken planks and I had to miss an outdoor session. Seems a little unfair, as I was the injured party. Oh well, we're all back to normal and I have a scrape on my side to talk about to my paddock mates.

You may know I have a new brother - still no official name. Apparently it was easy to name me, but Lil' Sir is something else again. I'll be sure to let you know when they finally come to a decision.

Speaking of new brothers, or sisters. We're hoping for one more before we let things settle down again. Wish us the best! Such a nice big family we're having. [This will be our 3rd Iron Spring Farm stallion breeding - Consul this time.] And speaking of family, Smokey a former stable mate, is returning for the summer and we're all happy. Smokey is a great little pony. Ride on Smoky and Collin!

The grass keeps getting farther and farther away. I can see over the fence much better. I'm looking forward to doing what the big horses are doing. They say I have a while to just hang out and grow up a bit.

I hope you all are enjoying sunny weather. I'll be back soon.

Love, Bella

Big Day for Bella

Hey Everyone,

I'm officially a yearling. I keep hearing people say Happy Birthday to me. I'm not sure what that means besides extra carrots and apples but they seem very happy about my birthday.

So, I guess a yearling should have an adventure....When Connie, my human mom, was bring me and Duke in from our pasture time she let me look inside the trailer. Then we just started to walked right in. It was really neat. I slipped off the edge once, but I wanted to see what was in there so I tried again with no problem. It's kinda fun, but not so big. Someone said I was brave. I'm not sure about that, but I do like to explore.

I also had my first hair cut. I really like it. I'm excited about the the new pasture Dave [dad] is building just for me. It should be nice.

I wonder when my new brother or sister is coming. I hope soon, then I will have someone to play with. Everyone is looking pretty tired around here and they're all this focus on Miah Miah Miah. I hope they were that excited about a new foal when it was me. And I'm sure they were. They have such big hearts, I'm not even jealous. I'm sure I'll get lots of love and maybe more because I'll have a little brother [hooves crossed] of my own.

Coming One

My birthday is coming up! I'm going to be 1! Everyone also says that my new baby brother or sister is coming soon! I can't wait. I can tell them him everything works, and then they won't have to figure it all out like I did. Mom's getting really big, which I guess is normal, but a little scary looking!

I've been having the worst time. It's gotten so cold I'm not allowed to go outside. I know, I couldn't believe it either. Then I have to be walked around inside the barn and I'm not allowed to buck like crazy! I want to go out!!!

When I heard we were having even more snow, I had to kick the wall several times. What else is a filly to do?

Now I noticed the ground is much farther away, I eat much more food, and I'm growing out of my blanket. These must be normal things because all of the other horses in the barn say they were as small as me at some time, but not for long.

I have to go now, I hope today they'll let me go and play in the white stuff!

Chilly White Stuff

Hi!

I don't think I mentioned this before, but there is this crazy white stuff that keeps falling out of the sky! It's cold, and turns into water when it lands on my nose. I now like to wear my blanket because its water-proof and warm.

Much of the same things have been happening around home, and nothing too interesting has happened. I've developed some tastes now. I like to eat hay now, and grain, which I'm offered more of! I don't like to eat peppermints, which everyone thinks is strange. I don't like the flavor so I spit them out.

Sometimes some friends come by and put there backs to me so I lick them and try to pick them up from the back of the jacket! Seems to get their attention.

Bye for now!

Riding Instructions: Front Row Seat

Hi everyone!
I haven't written in a while, but a lot has been happening. It's gotten really chilly lately and I have a piece of cloth put over me that makes me warmer called a "blanket".

I've been watching the other horses going around and around in the ring in front of my stall, sometime jumping over funny sticks they call obstacles. Speaking of obstacles, I was led over this one called a "pole". My human dad, Dave, caught me by surprise, and before I knew what was happening, the stick was in front of me and I had to walk over it. Really didn't have a choice! The second time I was ready. It seemed scarier, and I tried not to go over, but was forced too. The third time I knew there was no getting out of it, so I jumped it really big. Then I learned that it wouldn't hurt me so I just walked over it. Hey, no big deal.

Here's a picture of me, taken by Ariel, my human sister.
I'll keep you posted on the inevitable strange happenings that go on around here.

Ciao,
Bella

Bella's Night Excursion

Hello Everybody!
I miss you all. And I miss seeing the children that were here all summer playing with me. It's much more quiet since it's colder and dark so early - my goodness midnight comes at 6pm! Who turned out the lights! One thing is it's pretty warm in the barn. I hear we have it extra nice so I'm counting my blessings. That cold and rain routine isn't much fun.

Ok, on to the topic for the day. I had a great, exciting and unexpected adventure the other night. Someone, who shall remain nameless, left my stall gate open. [Oh Joy, Oh Joy] and when everyone left I took immediate advantage to go see, you guessed it, My MOM! There she was standing across the aisle - it's a rather large aisle since we actually ride in here in the winter, but I can see her and was really longing for a nuzzle and a bit of time with Myah my Momma.

It's funny the way this turned out. I really love her, don't get me wrong, and I love my human mom, and I LOVE Duke, my new pasture mate. He really takes care of me and runs my legs off in the turn out. I don't really have time to miss mom and so it's not been so bad. This weaning thing. It took a couple of weeks, but we both got past it. And, as I said, Duke is right here to be my friend and look out for me. If I get lonely I hang my head out the stall door and he does the same and we rub noses. Isn't that sweet.

Ok - I'm off to do something important, like eat or drink or talk to Duke, you know how it is. But I'll write again soon.

Love you all,
Bella

Weaning Time - Where's Mom?!

The scariest thing is happening around here. Now, I'm not in a stall with mom anymore! I know, it's very upsetting. I thought that they were taking me out for a walk, then mom stayed in the stall. They walked me across the barn and put me into a stall next to another horse named Duke. At first I thought they were just waiting to bring mom in, but then she didn't come. I called for her and banged on the gate, but mom just ignored me and ate.

Over the next few days, I got to know Duke. He's nice, and a little paranoid like me. We got turned out together, and for some reason, when I started to run, he followed, chasing me. I kept trying to get away, but he put his ears forward and kept chasing. Luckily I found out he just wanted to follow me.

Now mom goes out into the "big horse pasture." I want to go there too! Mom calls a lot now and she acts all crabby to the other horses.

On the other hand, I like having my own "pad" as everyone says. I can run around without bumping into mom. I also can eat all I want, and not have to share hay or water with mom. I like watching mice run across the door. Duke is lucky. He has his very own pet mouse that sleeps in the blanket on the door. I want my own mouse!

Well bye for now,

~Bella~

A Mess Gets Better

I'm writing with a sigh of relief. I had a close call recently - that's what everyone said. All I know is that my hoof and leg hurt very bad, I could hardly walk, they wouldn't let me out of my stall [the worst!] and after a lot of fussing, I seem to be back to my frisky self again.

I'm not even sure what happened, I heard the word abscess. I had been having some trouble walking and my hoof felt funny and looked funny and the man that worked on my mom a few weeks ago, a blacksmith, came in and started on me. It was my back right and he filed my nail way down and I felt a bit better. But whatever was wrong wasn't done with me because it came back, and it was really scary. The worst part is that my human family was away at the dressage finals and I started to get really sick. They had a good friend keeping an eye on me - Connie could tell I was still not quite right - and that dear person spotted a swelling in my leg. She took my temperature - you know how they do that! - and then before I knew it the vet was there.

Later I heard the family say they were so concerned and wanted to come home, but the vet assured them the antibiotics would do what they could - with or without them - and not to rush home. In the meantime I ended up with a terrible explosion of goop out of my heel! Honestly it was rather gross, but it felt better too and the swelling started to go down.

As if this wasn't all bad enough, there I was, confined to my stall. I get very irritable when I can't get out and play - I don't care how bad I feel - so it was really the worst all around.

I want to say thank you to Ressa, our vet and my family for being so good to me. I want to say sorry if I was ornery - more ornery then I've ever been - and how happy I am to be feeling better.

You can see by the pictures that I'm on the mend - out in the pasture with my mom and grateful for something called duck tape [?] that put me back together enough to get me outside.

I'll write more about this adventure - I've had enough for now, but I did want to let you know. And I hear I have a few fans that were missing my writing too - so this is for you who have an interest in what goes on in the life and mind of a very fortunate filly. Thank you.

Life is good!

Wanna Race?

I haven't written in a while, but some crazy things have been happening!

Yesterday a man came into my stall and started scraping and cutting at my mom's feet! I vaguley remember that happening once, but last time I paid no attention. What got me interested was everybody saying "When does Bella get her feet done?"Well all I know is that I won't stand for that when the time comes! Although, to be honest, mom didn't seem to mind.

The other crazy thing was getting that weird tasting goop put into my mouth again. I learned that it's called "wormer" or something. They caught me off guard again and yeck, there it was and I had to swallow it.. I'll have to figure out how often they do that and watch for the sneak attack. Could be around the same time as they have my mom's feet trimmed. I'll try to remember next time.

The best thing to tell you is how much fun I'm having when the children are riding in the ring. I buck and try to race them when they come by my pasture. For some reason they just put their heads down and ignore me. Well if they don't want to have fun with it, that's up to them. For me, it's the highlight of the day!

By for now!

Yummy grass

Strange things have been happening. For the last few nights, I've been taken out in the evening, and made to stand around while mom eats grass. It is weird! The first night, I thought I'd stir things up and buck around, but was soon punished Then I learned that I couldn't win, and only bucked a little.

I started to get a taste of grass. The more I have it, the more I like! I used to only eat it, but now it is getting tastier and tastier. I can't get enough! But that doesn't mean I run around while I'm out!

Everyone keeps talking about how I'm going to "ridden" some day, what ever that means. Little do they know that I'm going to grow up to be a grooming and petting horse!

Farther from the Ground

I'm going to take a moment from my busy day and say hello and let you know that I'm having a great life! If this is what it's all about, I'm very happy. We go out and play, roll, run, nip, jump, anything really. What do I feel like doing? Ok, I'll do that! What more can a girl ask for?

I have to say I love my moms and the children. They're so good to me and only fight back with me on occassion [all connected to the word no, I notice] usually they seem thrilled with anything that I do. I like making them happy.

Oh yes, I notice that I'm a lot farther from the ground now. I wonder what's up?

Love to everyone

Beware

I haven't written because I've been having such a great summer that frankly, I forgot!

The other day, the strangest thing happened. I was having my halter put and and was planning to go outside, when my human mom surprised me. She pulled out a plastic needle thing, and put it in my mouth. Some funny tasting paste came out and I had to swallow it. It was nasty!!!! She caught me by surprise this time, but next time I'll be ready!!!

My mom is hopefully going to have another baby soon, and then I can have a brother or sister to play with! That would be so much fun!!!!

I have to go now, it's feeding time and that means petting time. A double treat.

Love

Schools In

My life is so busy I haven't written. There are a few interesting things to tell. For one I found a way out of my stall. That was fun for a minute. Actually it was a tiny bit scary as I rolled out under my stall door ending up in a tangle, then managed to get up and voila! I was out, looking in at my mom. The kids were sure surprised to see me standing there when they came in to feed. They hustled me back into where I belonged. A good thing, cause I was getting thirsty.

I know I heard the children say that school's out, but for me it seems a never-ending string of lessons. It's fun though, don't get me wrong. I love new things. I do pretty well, as long as they don't scare me too much.

I've had my hoofs picked at - Ariel likes to do that. I've had fly spray put on my ears - some very nice smelling stuff with marigolds. I still get lead around on my rope and we all seem to be getting better at that. Humans learn pretty quickly I've found.

I did have a moment the other day that wasn't so nice. Ariel and I were walking along and all of a sudden this loud, whooshing sound came out right by my ear. I nearly popped out of my hooves. Later I found, after everyone stopped laughing [thank you very much] that Ariel had sneezed. Well, I didn't know! They said I cleared at least 6 inches.

So every day's something new. Including finding out my mom is pregnant again. Oh boy someone to romp with next year!

Ciao for now, Bella,

She's Up! She's Down!

I am sorry I haven't been writing.Everything is so exciting!

The craziest thing happened on the way to the pasture. I was being led out by my human mom, and wanted to fly right into the pasture. The usual. I have to go down the dipl to get there. I noticed that my human mom was holding me very tight, but that never stopped me before so I forged ahead! As I ran down the dip, my foot slipped on some really wet dirt and I fell! I was very surprising, and had a hard time getting up!

I was helped up [thank you very much] and then wasn't very excited about going down there again. I also learned to trust my human mom a little bit more when she tells me to be careful!

I love to run and buck, but now I don't get laughed at when I kick and buck on the lead, [instead I get punished] Maybe this is just a phase, they might grow out of it.

Bye now, I have to go eat!

My Photo Shoot

I've been so busy playing and exploring that I haven't written in a long time. To be honest, I'm still trying to figure things out. One day the humans are all smiles and hugs - they give the BEST back scratches - and the next I'm hearing words like ornery, spoiled and beast. Not being sure what these mean, I can only guess it's not too good because of the way they look and sound when they say it. Drat. It was going so well too.

One of my favorite things is to chase the children around the paddock. Now that's really fun and they scream when I butt them with my head and then they take off running right away. Works like a charm every time. I have a feeling this is going to change though. They aren't running very far and now they're turning and giving me that stern look and voice.

Although I'm feeling that sort of fun is coming to an end, I still had a great time today running my auntie around a little. She brought a man into the paddock with cameras and you could tell neither of them were expecting what I was going to do. I got some great reactions. It was precious and someone should have taken pictures. Wait, someone did! My buddy Andy showed up and took a few snaps. It was fun until they put me on a lead and tried to make me stand still. That was the end of the party for me - you can see here I wasn't amused anymore, and to be honest, my sweet auntie seemed at the end of her robe [and mine] by that time too.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Words like training, and not getting away with that behavior, were flying around and I think I'm in for a new adventure....

xo, Bella

Insider Tip
When the ground gets hard and dry this summer, try packing your horse's hoofs with hoof packing 2 - 3 times per week. The hoof packing will make their hoofs more pliable and will help draw out any soreness.
