The weather is warm, outdoor training is underway, and we're heading off to the show ring. That always means more time grooming and bathing the horses. This year we're spending much less time bathing because we're using the Spray Away Deluxe Sprayer by Straight Arrow.

When we first worked with the sprayer it took us a few minutes to figure out how to put it together. The directions seemed a little confusing, so make sure you take the time to figure it out before hand, and not while you are holding your horse at the wash rack. [We've included a link to an online video demonstration.]

You need to use a body wash in this sprayer, not shampoo. Body wash is a thinner solution that rinses out easily. Once you have the Sprayer together and the container filled with the wash you're ready to go. The dial on the top of the Sprayer will let you rinse with water only or dispense a controlled amount of wash. For everyday or frequent baths we use the lowest setting which is A. This seems to clean the horse of sweat and dirt from the day and not dry out the coat. It also rinses out very easily. The best part is that you can wash a lot of horse quickly and not get wet.

I also gave my yearling a bath for the first time and she tolerated it very well. It's a little different from the hose so let your horses have a minute to adjust. A show horse or a horse that is bathed often will have no trouble.

I have two kids in Pony Club and for their competitions their horses have to be clear of all dandruff and scurf. I have not found the Sprayer to get that really deep clean I need for those situations. We still use a bucket and scrubber for that, but for everyday it works great.

I use very little of the wash, but still found that it was a bit expensive to use, about $2 a wash. Mane and Tail have now come out with a concentrate and that makes it much more cost effective, about 50 cents per wash. The Sprayer itself is pricey, at about $50. The upside is that it's very well made and each part is replaceable. So it will last and last if you're interested in making the investment. The manufacturer tells me that they are coming out with a less expensive model this spring.

Partner Product: A travel model is also available with wash solution attached in a bottle. This can be refilled and it's really nice to have in your trunk and take to shows.

Additional Reviews

Event Rider John Williams: We love the travel system. It's fast and simple to use and when we ran out of the review sample, we went out and bought more. I'd call that a positive endorsement. We were able to wash 7 times with the $14 product that you buy off the shelf with sprayer and product in one unit. I understand that we can refill the product bottle with a dilution of the Mane n Tail concentrate.

Stallion barn grooms at Iron Spring Farm give enthusiastic praise to the Spray Away Delux and say it's simple and quickly cleans their Friesians. I asked if the system was effective enough for show, especially considering the amount of hair in mane, tail and feathers, and the answer was Yes!

Conclusion
I really like my Sprayer and use it all the time. I'm not sure if I would have bought it if it weren't for writing this review because I would consider it a luxury. With that said, I appreciate the convenience and I wouldn't give mine up. So if the price keeps you from getting one, keep your eyes open for the new model that is less expensive. This is a product that can add convenience to your life in a simple way.

Insider Tip
When the ground gets hard and dry this summer, try packing your horse's hoofs with hoof packing 2 - 3 times per week. The hoof packing will make their hoofs more pliable and will help draw out any soreness.
